The Disease Called Unemployed

What prompted me to write this article is I have just watched a video of a recent program on CNBC where a woman is interviewed about a tragic situation that happened to her family. It started with her husband being laid off in 2008.

He was the sole breadwinner and received a moderate severance package. He started looking for work. In the meantime he went through his severance package, his retirement savings and the equity in his home. Finally, his wife went out and found an administrative job somewhere, mainly for the benefits, as they could no longer afford the Cobra healthcare costs, which amounted to $1,500/month for the whole family.

This put a lot of stress on the marriage and has finished up in a divorce filing for this couple, which will break up the family and have a lasting negative impact forever, especially on the kids. In my view this was all caused by an illness, which I call “unemployeditis.” The symptoms of this illness are withdrawal, denial, laziness, self-pity and complete narrow-mindedness. There is no medication for this condition although many turn to alcohol, drugs and/or sometimes even crime.

What is amazing is that, although this disease is not infectious, it is spreading like wildfire across the United States. I am sure some psychologists somewhere have even start “unemployed clinics” to deal with this problem. Something like Alcoholics Anonymous. The more important question is, “What is this disease, where does it come from and how can it be treated and cured?”

To find a cure we must first understand the essence of the disease itself. What is unemployeditis and where does it come from? I was exposed to the cause of the disease during my time as an insurance broker, interviewing potential candidates to join my firm. The insurance business is normally made up of commissioned agents who have no base salary, much like the real estate industry. There is an investment to get licensed and then you get paid on what you bring in.

In many cases I was interviewing people who had come from the fixed salary environment. They were all excited about the potential of the insurance industry until they realized there was no base salary. The symptoms of unemployeditis suddenly reared their ugly head. “Well, I cannot accept a position that doesn’t give me a base salary (and a bunch of fringe benefits)”, was the first sign. When I pointed out that we paid on performance and that I had no problem paying them $100,000/month as long as they performed, I saw that blank look coming from the other side of my desk as unemployeditis began to take hold.

It didn’t matter if I approached them with questions like, “Well didn’t you have a job before? Isn’t that why you are now unemployed?” or “Wouldn’t you consider starting as an insurance agent and then you can still look for another JOB? At least you might earn something in the meantime”. It didn’t matter. Unemployeditis had taken over and they were already thinking about their next interview and their quest to find someone who would part with their own money to pay them for showing up 9 – 5.

This disease has now spread and become even more deeply rooted because of the current recession we are experiencing. I heard last week from a friend he had applied for one job where they had received 495 applications. So his chances were about 1 in 500. Yet he is still sending out his resume 15 times a day. My question to him was, “Isn’t this a waste of time and energy? Why don’t we sit down and I will show you a way where you could earn twice as much as the job you won’t find and your time will be your own?”

He wasn’t impressed and he will just continue to send out resumes, go on occasional interviews as he spends all of his assets keeping up the lifestyle he has been used to. This is where I say, the best cure for this disease is a good dose of network marketing. This is what would happen if the unemployed started on this cure.

They would learn how to be independent. They could be around people in the same boat. They could meet inspirational leaders who would help them combat their disease. They could have business cards printed showing they were at least active in the business of their choice instead of having cards that calls them a “consultant”. In the labor market “consultant” translates into “unemployed”. They could have access to their own professional websites, marketing materials, DVD’s and regular meetings in their location. They would look good to their friends and family who saw them taking actions to cure them of this disease.

Then they might finally experience the total cure. Being compensated on how hard they work. Being self-sufficient and never having to report to a boss again. Maybe working from home so they could spend more time with their family and be involved more in the upbringing of the children. Reaching income levels that would allow them to take the trips they had previously only dreamed of and drive the cars they thought were the property only of film stars.

So the network marketing industry is a lot more than a place where you can just make a lot of money. It is a place where you can effectively fight the disease called unemployeditis. It restores your dignity, your professional image to society and probably the lack of income. But more importantly it offers you a path that could totally change you and your family’s life. What do you have to lose? The couple hundred bucks it cost to sign up? That’s a lot cheaper than the cost of losing all your assets, getting a divorce and maybe the endless hours you might have to spend at the psychologist’s office. If nothing else you will meet a lot of other people and hopefully a bunch of new friends.
